About 82% of employees globally are at risk of burnout this year - but only half of employers design work with wellbeing in mind.1
Think you may be suffering burnout?
Complete our Burnout quiz to find out.Too often the expectation lies with the individual to "fix" their burnout with a weekend away or other self-care interventions. Research has shown that burnout isn't just an individual problem, it's also an organisational issue.
Burnout happens when there is a mismatch between the conditions a person requires to do their best work and support their wellbeing and what their organisation provides.
The challenge is to identify the mismatch and then to advocate for yourself or find another way of solving this poor alignment, and neither option is an easy fix.
Some miss the signs that they’re headed towards the "danger zone", that slippery point at the start of a steep decline into poor health and dysfunction (much like the top of a steep bank down to a rushing river). It’s a slow, tortuous climb back to your former effectiveness.
Burnout used to be classified as a life-management problem, but more recently, the World Health Organisation reclassified it as a work-based syndrome caused by chronic stress. The three identifiable dimensions of burnout are:
The impact of unchecked burnout.
Research has linked unchecked burnout to many health problems, including hypertension, sleep disturbances, depression and substance abuse. Moreover, it can ruin relationships and jeopardise career prospects.
Why so many ignore burnout, often until it is too late
Burnout is a common challenge faced by driven, high achievers, yet it’s often misunderstood. Many narratives unfairly place the blame on individuals, suggesting that they can’t handle the workload or aren’t suited for their roles. This misplaced blame can lead to feelings of guilt and reluctance to seek help. Instead of addressing the issue, many choose to push through, ignoring the signs of burnout.
Idividuals will opten try some self-care tactics (weekends away, yoga classes, massages etc) whihc are useful but are not getting to the root cause
Sadly, untreated severe burnout can take years to recover from and can rob you of your relationships, career, health, wealth, and happiness. Burnout is a real and serious issue, and it's not your fault.
It can't be solved by a weekend away or by quick self-care fixes.
The best strategy is to take a multi-faceted approach to burnout.
We need to address burnout at the level of cultural and systemic change within our workplaces, and at the individual level.
Organisational change takes time. Individual change can start now. You can learn the steps to manage and recover from your burnout.
